Dr. Paul N. Morton is an Orthopedic surgeon that practices on Oahu at the Big Island.  He treats a broad range of orthopedic conditions including arthritis, sports injuries, hip and knee replacements, trauma, and robotic joint arthroplasty.  He believes in treating his patients with a holistic approach – incorporating patients’ desires and expectations into the treatment of their musculoskeletal problem.

In his spare time, Dr. Morton enjoys covering mixed martial events.  His passions include Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, traveling, boking, swimming, water sports, and hiking.  Dr. Morton embraces helping patients on their healthcare journey to get back in action and deciding when to pursue nonoperative and surgical care.

A local boy who was born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii, Dr. Morton graduated from Kea’au High School.  He went on to earn his Bachelor of Science from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio.  In college, he began training as a firefighter while double-majoring in Chemistry and Biomedical Sciences.

Dr. Morton discovered his passion for medicine as a first responder at Miami Township Fire-Rescue.  Working as a firefighter and emergency medical technician, he enjoyed helping his patients from car accidents, search-and-rescue, and medical emergencies.  The excitement of the job and passion for helping people led him to search for a lifelong, fulfilling career.

Eventually, Dr. Morton returned to Hawaii to obtain his medical degree from the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii.  He spent half of his third-year medical school clinical rotations on the Big Island.  He did his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at St. Luke’s University and Health Network in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.  In his final year, he served as Chief Orthopedic Resident

Before returning home to Hawaii, Dr. Morton obtained his ACGME-accredited fellowship training in Adult Reconstruction at the University of Chicago.  During his fellowship, he had excellent mentors who taught him the latest technologies in robotic joint replacements and how to care for joint replacement disasters.  He then went on to complete an AO Trauma Fellowship at Charité Universitätsmedizin in Berlin, Germany – one of the biggest hospitals in Europe.

Dr. Morton’s focus is on joint replacement, joint preservation, sports injuries, and salvage procedures. He is an expert in minimally-invasive techniques, including the Direct Anterior Approach to hip replacement, and is well-versed in modern techniques such as partial knee replacements and robotic-assisted joint replacements.

Dr. Morton also has extensive training in complex lower extremity joint revisions, including those designed to treat megaprosthesis, infections, arthrofibrosis, and periprosthetic fractures. His research has been presented at multiple national conferences, including the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, and the Orthopedic Trauma Association.

Philosophically, Dr. Morton’s believes everyone deserves a patient-centric and individualized approach to treatment. Not all patients with the same problem desire the same treatments. He will present to you both non-operative and surgical treatment options. He provides in providing his patients with the best that modern orthopedics has to offer, utilizing rapid-recovery techniques, robotic joint replacements, advanced analgesia, and cosmetic wound closure.  By participating in research and staying on top of the latest advancements, he will provide you with the next generation in care of your musculoskeletal problem.

Dr. Morton feels blessed to return home to Hawaii.  It has always been his dream to bring the advanced training and knowledge that he learned back to Hawaii.

In the day-to-day, Dr. Morton works with patients facing total joint replacements, sports injuries, arthroscopy, trauma, and general orthopedic issues. He provides orthopedic trauma coverage to The Queen’s Medical Center. He is a clinical instructor, providing lectures and training to the new generation of orthopedic residents.
