Dr. Brian Gilmer was born and raised in Houston, TX. His mother was an orthopedic nurse which fostered his interest in orthopedic surgery and research. He moved to Seattle, WA for residency training and found passion in the outdoors. During his fellowship, Dr. Gilmer focused his practice on ski and snowboard injuries. Early in practice, Dr. Gilmer co-founded Mammoth Orthopedic Institute before moving to Reno. Gradually his clinical, research, and teaching focus has narrowed to treatment of the knee joint including arthroscopic ACL and meniscal treatment and robotic-assisted knee replacement.
“Practicing in the Sierras has allowed me to treat outdoor athletes of all kinds and ages including skiers, snowboarders, climbers, mountain bikers, and motocross.”
Dr. Gilmer uniquely focuses on arthroscopic knee surgery and open knee surgery for athletes of all ages.
Dr. Gilmer is a team physician for the US Ski and Snowboard Teams (USSA) and works in particular with the athletes of the US Freeski team. He has provided team coverage for the Dew Tour, X Games, and Mammoth Grand Prix. He provides support to the Mammoth Ski and Snowboard teams and is medical director for the Mammoth Hospital Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation.
